| Many
people just don't get around to maintaining their vehicles today.
With vacation time here, it's time to make this summer a
little safer. Have your car checked out before that big trip.
|
|
|
| A
few tips for having your family's vehicle checked out before that
big trip:
|
- Set
up an appointment in advance.
Try to schedule an appointment two or three weeks in advance.
This allows time for any repairs you might need.
- Let
the service center know you'll be on a trip.
You'll want to make sure everything is checked out, from belts
to fluids to brakes to tires.
- Consider
having an auxiliary transmission cooler installed.
If your vehicle has an automatic transmission or if your
vehicle is at risk, an auxiliary cooler will help reduce
stress on the transmission by keeping the temperature down.
Conditions where your vehicle could be at risk include towing
a trailer, overloading the car, spending a lot of time in
temperatures above 90 degrees, and extensive stop-and-go
driving. The same is true with recreational vehicles (motor
homes).

|
| AND
WHAT SHOULD YOU WATCH OUT FOR WHILE YOU'RE ON YOUR TRIP?
|
|
|
- If
you're stuck in traffic, shift into "Neutral".
If you're on the way to the beach and get stuck in traffic,
shift into "Neutral". If you sit still in
"Drive" with your car's automatic transmission
engaged and your foot on the brake, your vehicle's cooling
system is under added strain. By shifting into
"Neutral" while sitting still with your foot on the
brake, the drivetrain is no longer engaged and the
transmission develops less heat. Keeping the temperature down
will help to avoid any damage to the fluid or internal parts
of an automatic transmission.
- If
you go into mountainous terrain, do not use
"Overdrive".
For cars and trucks with automatic transmissions, select
"Drive" or press the "OD Cancel/Off"
button when going up and down steep mountains, especially if
you are pulling a trailer, boat, or other heavy load.
Overdrive (often shown as “OD” on your selector) is
designed for driving on relatively flat roadways.
