Subject :   April Showers…Can Make For Dangerous Driving

When you drive as much as most of the drivers do for our fleet accounts, you know the potential dangers of driving during severe weather. If you get caught in a violent thunderstorm this spring,  here are a few things to keep in mind:

 1. Get off the road as soon as possible. - The sooner you can safely get off the road the better. If you can not find shelter in a solid building, you are best to stay in the car and park in an open area away from trees and power lines.
 2.  When lightning strikes. - Should lightning strike, vehicles are generally a safe place because you are shielded by metal. If your vehicle is hit by lightning, chances are you will need a paint job or more. Electronic components are also typically affected by lightning strikes.
 3.  Watch for downed power lines. - Downed power lines are a major concern. If a downed power line should hit your vehicle and cause a fire, open the door and jump as far as you can from the vehicle--never touch the ground and any metal part of the car at the same time! If there's no fire, you are better off staying in the car and waiting for help.
While these are serious situations, one other thing you want to avoid when severe weather hits is a transmission problem. Drivers are more prone to go off the road during severe weather. If you get stuck, it's best to have a tow truck pull you out. If you must rock the car, come to a complete stop before changing gears. Select "L" or "1" when going forward.
